HPCCT coordinated the third Community Christmas Tree of Remembrance project. This project provides community members access to a simple public ritual that allows people to remember a loved one who has died during the Christmas season. A guide has been written to assist others to organise a tree in their local community.
Participation in 2010 saw 38 trees set up across the Hume region during the month of December. This was up from 26 in 2009. 14 of these trees were new in 2010. Support offered by HPCCT to the local organisers ranged from supplying a tree and start up resources to very minimal input.
Resources are available and some can be adapted to your community's

Evaluation reports were received from local organisers about 22 trees. It was reported that 913 message cards were placed on these trees by community members. They also told us that community partners involved included palliative care volunteer programs, an aged care service, a Church pastoral care parishioner, a Rotary Club, hospitals, community centres, a neighbouhood house bookshop, libraries, tourist information centres, community health centres and council offices.
Local ownership of the project is becoming more evident as demonstrated in the evaluations collected.
"The messages and comments demonstrate how valuable this activity is to the community. The ease of access to materials and guidelines and evaluations ... make it easy to administer, implement and evaluate"
"Yes we would undertake this project again"
"Yes relatively easy to organise, positive feedback from all involved, increasing response each year"
